Out of curiosity what is it you don't like about Macstitch? Macstitch/Winstitch are generally looked at as the highest rated and most popular of the professional level programs. The limiting factor for this will be the printer being used and whether or not you can get it calibrated enough to print so that the pattern is lined up correctly. I can see 2 features of this program that could justify the cost. Cross stitch software for the Mac was harder to find. The competitors that have higher ratings like Mac/Winstitch and PCstitch are a fraction of the cost ($52/40 and $50/20 respectively for full price/discount code), don't have basic functions locked behind multiple pricing tiers, and don't have a yearly fee in addition to the base cost of the program. I don't use it because it doesn't seem worth the price, especially since they lock basic functionality features like being able to use 1/4 stitches, sorting the palette, or change the backstitching color or width/number of strands behind the higher cost tiers. MacStitch has a chart auto-conversion image tool, but I didn’t find it too useful. They do have a page on their website comparing the different versions. While Cross Stitch Professional isn't the worst rated it's definitely towards the bottom with an overall rating of 4/10. Don't reveal whole patterns unless you are the rights holder. Lord Libidan has a post with reviews of several cross stitch pattern making programs that gets updated regularly (most recent was this month) and is sorted/separated by platform. MacStitch/WinStitch are very reasonably priced and everyone should pay for their own copy & updates.
